The author studies real analytic SL(n,\({\mathbb{R}})-actions\) on the sphere \(S^ m\), provided 5\(\leq n\leq m\leq 2n-2\). He shows that such actions are completely characterized by a certain real analytic \({\mathbb{R}}^*\)-action on a homotopy \((m-n+1)\)-sphere. In a final section he constructs continuously many \({\mathbb{R}}^*\)-actions on the standard k-sphere.
