This is a reprint of an address given by the author during the second Conference on Mathematical Education in South Asia in 1960, published by the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. It contains the view of the author about a year's introduction to abstract algebra course for graduate students. Some general remarks are followed by a description of the possible contents. Some key words: set theory; general composition; groups; rings, fields and vector spaces; ideals; quotient fields, rings of polynomials, extension of fields; factorization in rings; extensions of commutative fields; Galois theory; valuation theory.
