This paper, being an essay submitted in competition for the Adams Prize in December 1964, is mainly devoted to Professor Oldroyd's fundamental ideas developed in a series of papers published in 1950-58. Various problems connected with the formulation of rheologically invariant equations of state in a convected as well as in a fixed coordinate system are discussed in greater detail. Particular attention is paid to the convected differentiation and integration with respect to time. It should be emphasized that many results presented in the paper, apart from their historical meaning, remain still valid and very useful for modern formulation of the constitutive equations.
