The author is concerned with the following well-known recursive constructions for Steiner systems: (i) The existence of S(2,k;v) and of \(S(2,k;k^ 2)\) implies that of S(2,k;kv); (ii) the existence of S(2,k;v) and of a TD[k;v] (or equivalently, k-2 MOLS of order v) implies that of S(2,k;kv). The paper is of an expository nature; the author's aim is to provide intuitive insight into the known constructions by using geometric terminology.
