This is a biography of C. L. F. Lindemann (1852-1939), who established the transcendence of \(\pi\) in 1882. The author describes his studies at Göttingen, Erlangen and Munich, his publication arising out of Clebsch's lectures, his work with Felix Klein and his professional career at Freiburg (1877-1883), Königsberg (1883-1893) and Ludwig-Maximilians- Universität (1893-1939).
