Embeddings of finite Chevalley groups and periodic linear groups (Q801159)

Let G be a simple periodic linear group over a field of characteristic \(p>0\). \textit{O. H. Kegel} [Math. Z. 95, 169-195 (1967; Zbl 0147.270)] proved that \(G=\cup_{i}G_ i\) where \(G_ i\) are finite linear groups. The author shows that G is isomorphic to a Chevally group over a field which is a union of finite fields provided \(p>2\) and all \(G_ i\) are known simple groups. In a subsequent paper [Sib. Mat. Zh. 25, No.2 (144), 67-83 (1984; Zbl 0545.20034)] the author has proved that \(G_ i\) can be really found to be known provided \(p>2\).
