This is an English translation of an Appendix written by the author in 1977 to the Russian translation of the book by \textit{M. S. Raghunathan} [Discrete subgroups of Lie groups (1972; Zbl 0254.22005)]. The main result of the paper is the proof of arithmeticity of any irreducible discrete subgroup \(\Gamma\) in a semisimple real algebraic group G of rank greater than 1, such that G/\(\Gamma\) has a finite invariant measure.
