\textit{Rong-ging Jia} in ''Approximation by smooth bivariate splines on a three direction mesh'' [Approximation theory IV, Proc. int. Conf., Tex. A \& M Univ. 1983, 539-545] has given a lower bound for the approximation order of bivariate splines on a three direction mesh. In the present paper we give a simplified proof of Jia's results and also show that they are sharp.
