The author proves an existence result for nonlinear parabolic variational inequalities, and a Meyers estimate for the solutions. The existence theorem is proved by penalization. In proving Meyers estimate the author uses a refinement of the method by \textit{M. Giaquinta} and \textit{M. Struwe} [Math. Z. 179, 437-451 (1982; Zbl 0469.35028)].
