An alternative formulation to the updated Lagrangian formulation is presented. It may be called a partially updated Lagrangian formulation. The basic equilibrium equations are transformed into a weak form suitable for finite element discretization. Numerical examples are included which show the importance of the inclusion of local element deformations in formulations for geometrically nonlinear problems.
