\textit{T. Asoh} has classified all free involutions on surfaces [Hiroshima Math. J. 6, 171-181 (1976; Zbl 0332.57021)]. In this paper, using a different technique, we extend his results by characterizing all fixed point sets of involutions of closed surfaces.
