The author deals in this important paper with the practically relevant question how critical loads and the corresponding eigenmodes for bifurcation buckling of slender structures are changed when cavities or reinforcements in the structure are introduced. The problem is treated in formulating a linear eigenvalue problem in which only terms of the same order of magnitude of a small parameter are retained. Application to several problems in structural mechanics are given.
