The paper analyzes some fundamental aspects of the theory of finite elasticity considering the effects of internal kinematical constraints. The underlying mathematical structure is presented. The theory is illustrated by considering several old and new examples of internal constraints. The geometrical interpretations are provided. The issue of material symmetry in the presence of internal constraints is explored.
