A ``duality'' can be introduced among matroids with lattice-theoretic concepts but the relationship between this relation and the ``usual'' one is not clear. J. H. Mason conjectured that if M has such a ``dual'' then so has \(M^*\). The authors show that the ``non-Desargues'' configuration is a counterexample.
