The authors apply a work of the second author [Global existence results for reaction diffusion systems (to appear)] to obtain a global existence for a system of reaction diffusion equations modelling the spread of an infectious disease within a population. They then investigate the long time behavior of the system. These results extend recent results of \textit{G. F. Webb} [Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 67, 119-135 (1981; Zbl 0479.92017)] to domains of arbitrary spatial dimension and treat the case of varying diffusion in each component.
