A corollary to Casson's work on his \(\lambda\)-invariant is that: The number of nondegenerate irreducible unitary representations of the fundamental group of a homology 3-sphere is even. The authors generalize this result to all finitely presented perfect groups which admit only finitely many non-trivial representations in SU(2).
