An entry for June 5, 1796 in Gauss' `Tagebuch' reads: ``Periodorum summa omnibus infra modulum numeris pro elementis sumptis: fact gen \(((n+1)a- na)a^{n-1}.\)'' The author rejects an interpretation given by Bachmann in the 1917 edition of Gauss's `Werke' and suggests an alternative which is more consistent with the notation of another entry of the same date.
