This paper deals with the analysis of a model equation, a third order nonlinear differential one, for large scale ocean circulation. The author investigates the existence of solutions for two sets of boundary conditions: a ``no-slip'' one and a ``stress-free'' one. His analysis resorts to a topological shooting argument and the author proves that the no-slip problem and the stress free problem each has at least one solution.
