A detailed macroscopic model of the excitation process of the myocardium is presented. It is characterized by a nonlinear system of parabolic and elliptic PDEs. The cardiac potential field is studied by perturbation techniques. Finite difference methods are used to obtain quantitative results which are illustrated by numerous plots and interesting comments.
