The author deals with adaptive designs for the one-way layout considering the situation where one is interested in the direct effects as well as the case where one is interested in a comparison with a control. The resulting least squares estimators are shown to be superior (with respect to the A-criterion) to any competing estimator based on a deterministic design. In the case of normal errors explicit formulae for the efficiency are given. There is a minor error on p. 335, lines 8 and 9: In both cases read \(N'\geq 2\) (instead of \(N'\geq 5)\).
