A simple combustion model consisting of one scalar conservative equation is studied in detail: deflagration and detonation waves, Riemann problem. An admissibility criterion is used to investigate the nonlinear stability of flows with combustion waves. The model exhibits instability for unburnt states for a sufficiently large binding energy and this appears physically reasonable. Many illustrations facilitate the understanding of the text.
