A semilinear elliptic system is considered which includes as a special case the model system of the \(W\)-strings in cosmology. The existence of multi-string solutions is proved and precise asymptotic decay estimates for the solutions are obtained close to infinity. A problem involving solitons in field theory is then solved as a special case.
