Using the approach of nonsmooth dynamical systems, a suitable method for the modelling of a rotary oil drilling system with friction is proposed. In this respect, the model of \textit{M. Kidouche} and \textit{R. Riane} is considered, see the paper [``On the design of proportional integral observer for a rotary drilling system'', in: 8th CHAOS Conference Proceedings. Henri Poincaré Institute. 1--12 (2015)]. Using a general Stribeck model for the frictional contact, the rotary drilling system is formulated as a well-posed evolution variational inequality, for which the mathematical properties are studied. Finally, some numerical simulations illustrate the theory.
