One speaks of \(k\)-spaces of matrices in the case where one investigates the subspaces of matrices in which every non-zero matrix has rank \(k\). The author investigates the maximal dimension for \(k\)-spaces of real matrices for small values of \(k\) and obtains complete results for \(k=2,3,4,7\). Furthermore, some upper bounds are given for the dimension of spaces of real \(n\times n\) matrices in which every non-zero element has rank at least \(n-1\).
