The author extends the Muirhead-Rado inequality from finite permutation groups to unitary actions of compact groups; and gives a characterization of saturation of this inequality. He also considers the case of group actions on Hermitian operators and gives a representation-theoretic characterization of the saturation condition for this case. At the end of the paper, an application to statistical physics is pointed out.
