The authors investigate the symmetric boundary integral formulations for Helmholtz transmission problems (HTP). HTP are transmission problems associated to the Helmholtz equation in the whole space with one or several interfaces separating the regions with different wave numbers. The authors first introduce the problem and the boundary integral formulation and then analyze the resulting boundary integral system. Conditions guaranteeing the convergence of Galerkin discretizations of this system are presented. Finally the authors comment on the structure of the system, possible Krylov-type iterations and give hint on other similar possibilities for coupling.
