Partial differential equations, governing MHD equilibrium, are solved in a conservation form that have discontinuities associated with islands and current sheets in plasma. The MHD variational principle is employed to calculate equilibrium and stability; indeed, the method is applied to both stellarators and tokamaks. The role played by the Fourier coefficients in estimating the loss of alpha-particles in a reactor is examined, and the magnetic fusion concept is discussed. It is a well written paper and should be of interest to someone working in this area.
