Band structure calculations of photonic crystals can be reduced, using Bloch/Floquet theory, to spectral problems for modified Maxwell operators with periodic boundary conditions. The authors analyze the finite element solution of these problems using modified edge elements. The convergence of the method is proved under general assumptions on the mesh and minimal regularity assumptions for the eigensolutions. Numerical results of band structure calculations for 2D structures are presented.
