The author first introduces a slightly different notion of eigenmatrix. Using this concept, he characterizes when an operator commutes with an operator of finite rank. The author uses this to show the main result: if an operator commutes with a finite-rank operator, then it must also commute with an operator of rank one. Also, it is shown that Toeplitz operators do not commute with operators of finite rank.
