The authors study error estimates of the nonconforming rotated \(Q_1\) element for the second-order elliptic problem on the anisotropic affine quadrilateral meshes [cf. \textit{R. Rannacher} and \textit{S. T. Turek}, Numer. Methods Partial Differ. Equations 8, No. 2, 97--111 (1992; Zbl 0742.76051)]. From the theoretical analysis and numerical test, it is observed that the rotated \(Q_1\) element preserves the optimal order of convergence even if the interpolation error is divergent.
