The authors construct a second-order and symmetric characteristic finite volume element (FVE) scheme for nonlinear convection diffusion problems on non-uniform rectangular meshes. They obtain optimal order error estimates in \(H^1\)-norm and give a numerical example to confirm the usefulness of the method.
