The authors examine the thermal effect on axially compressed buckling of a double-walled carbon nanotube, taking into account the effects of temperature of the surrounding elastic medium and van der Waals forces between the inner and outer nanotubes. The suggested model allows to derive an explicit formula for the critical value of axial stress due to the thermal and van der Waals effects on the infinitesimal buckling of nanotube. It is shown that this value increases (decreases) together with increasing in the temperature change at low (high) temperature. The obtained results are confirmed by numerical experiments.
