The problem inspiring this paper is the question of the separation, in phase/amplitude noise problems, of the phase and amplitude components resulting from error analysis in a nonlinear setting under random perturbations. The authors' approach to the effecting of this separation lies in the development of a general theory using a local moving transformation based on the periodic orbit. The theory is applied to a van der Pol oscillator.
