The purpose of this article is to give a modern proof of the following result of Kerékjártó: every compact group of homeomorphisms of \(\mathbb S^2\) is topologically conjugate to a closed subgroup of \(\mathbb O(3)\). The proof involves analyses of compact subgroups of the groups of homeomorphisms of the circle and the disc.
