The authors give various characterizations of the non-normed topological *-algebras which admit a \(C^*\)-enveloping algebra. Interconnections of these sorts of algebras with hermiticity and \(C^*\)-spectrality are discussed, and some automatic continuity results are given. A~complete introduction, several examples, some questions, and a bibliography are presented.
