The authors develop a method to approximate the solutions of an inhomogeneous ill-posed Cauchy problem of first order in a Banach space by the solutions of a well-posed abstract Cauchy problem of first order. The results are applied to study the backwards heat equation on the Banach space \(L^{p}(0,c)\) for \(1 \leq p < \infty\).
