The authors show that a characterization of Dirichlet convolution, obtained by \textit{J.-L. Nicolas} and the first author [J. Théor. Nombres Bordx. 14, No. 2, 561--583 (2002; Zbl 1071.11007)] has its analogue for the unitary convolution.
