The author deals with certain Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities on the real line. Non-zero functions for which equality case is attained are minimizer for a variational problem after appropriate normalization (Sobolev space is functional background). A result on concentration-compactness is used to characterize the minimizing sequence. Finally vanishing and dichotomy cases are excluded.
