The Cauchy problem to the equation \(u_{tt}-c(u)(c(u)u_x)_x=0\) for a smooth positive function \(c(u)\) and finite energy initial data is treated. The authors introduce new sets of dependent and independent variables and obtain weak solution of the problem as a fixed point of a contractive transformation.
