Structural results on geometric dilation (detour) of simple planar closed curves [cf. \textit{A. Ebbers-Baumann, R. Klein, E. Langetepe} and \textit{A. Lingas}, Comput. Geom. 27, No. 2, 123--134 (2004; Zbl 1045.65017)] are presented. The authors provide lower bounds for the dilation of closed curves in terms of their geometric properties, and prove that the circle is the only closed curve with smallest possible dilation.
