A genetic algorithm has been applied to solve the fuel reload optimization problem for a research reactor. This problem turned to be a multi-objective optimization problem that maximizes the effective multiplication factor and minimizes the power peaking factor while satisfying operational and safety constraints. In order to handle the constraint on the limited number of fuel shuffles, the genetic algorithm needs a suitable coding procedure for transforming loading patterns into chromosomes. Results for a research reactor type TRIGA MARK II are reported.
