The maximal operator \(\sigma_*\) of the Fejér means with respect to the character system of the group of 2-adic integers is investigated. It is proved that \(\sigma_*\) is bounded from the Hardy spaces \(H_p\) to \(L_p\) if and only if \(1/2<p<\infty\). The same is proved for the two-dimensional maximal operator defined in a cone.
