Effects of a rectangular fault in a strip conductor on electric current density and induced magnetic field distributions are studied analytically applying the method of complex electrical potential. The authors show the possibility to approximate the adjacent magnetic field by that of an effective magnetic dipole which significantly simplifies and speeds up practical computational procedures and allows for extension of their method to conductors with arbitrary fault profiles.
