This note originates from a question posed by \textit{P. Butzer} and \textit{H. J. Wagner} [Anal. Math. 1, 171--196 (1975; Zbl 0324.42011)]. The author shows that the best approximation to the difference operators on the cyclic groups of order \(2^n\) by a dyadic convolution operator are the restrictions of a generalized dyadic derivative.
