The authors study formal matrix rings over a given ring and determinants of such matrices. They formulate and study the realization problem, the classification problem and the isomorphism problem of such rings. They introduce the notion of the determinant of a formal matrix over a commutative ring. To such determinants, they extend the main properties of the ordinary determinant of matrices over commutative rings.
