The author examines the equations of compressible, inviscid, unsteady flow in two space dimensions. By reducing the problem of the interaction of an incident, plane shock with an obstacle to a nonlinear Goursat problem with fixed boundaries, he finds local solutions to the original problem. These are obtained as limits of sequences of linearized Goursat problems.
