The author completes a study begun earlier on \(2\times 2\) systems of hyperbolic conservation laws \(U_ t+F(U)_ x=0\), with F having an isolated umbilic point (i.e., when dF is a multiple of the identity at some value of U). He employs a result of Chicone concerning planar quadratic gradient vector fields in order to describe the behaviour of `undercompressive' shocks in the solution of the Riemann problem.
