Tensor products of B-splines are used for describing a method of fairing surfaces. Observing that a surface fairing procedure based on minimizing surface curvature properties has certain deficiencies, the authors propose two simplified forms of objective and constraint functions, which lead to further simplification in the measure of surface fairness. Several strategies for applying the fairing techniques are illustrated for the cases with one and eight degrees of freedom. The results obtained indicate that the technique is sound but it is expected that improvements may be achieved if (i) integration of the objective and constraint functions is performed with respect to Euclidean space rather than parametric space; (ii) the simplification obtained by dropping the `twist' term is avoided.
