The axisymmetric elastic-plastic torsion of a shaft of varying cross section along its axis is considered by using Hencky deformation theory and the Huber-Mises yield condition. The problem is then reformulated as a variational inequality in terms of stress field and stress functions. Conditions for uniqueness and existence of a solution are stated. This paper extends the results of (INVALID INPUT)C. W. Cryer [ibid. 76, 535- 570 (1980; Zbl 0452.73016)], who considered the case of monotonically varying cross section of the shaft.
