The string variables of a first quantized superstring are allowed to take on values in the exceptional Jordan algebra \({\mathfrak M}^ 8_ 3\) [\textit{P. Jordan}, Nachr. Ges. Wiss. Göttingen I, No. 41, II, No. 39, 209-217 (1933; Zbl 0007.08502); \textit{S. Sherman}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 64, 593-601 (1956; Zbl 0075.218)]. In this way, the finite-dimensional exceptional quantum mechanical space is attached to the space of string states and the exceptional Lie group \({\mathbb{F}}_ 4\) arises as an internal symmetry group of the theory.
